Landscapes & Seascapes in oils
New oil paintings inspired by my watercolour sketchbook work in Venice, the Outer Hebrides, the New Forest and the South Downs. Watercolours are translucent and ideally the application of paint to paper needs to be confident and right first time; then you must leave it alone and stop messing with it! With oils, however, it is possible to keep working on top and, as I am never happy with my paintings, I keep adding brush strokes here or there - sometimes even after they are framed - until they are sold!

'Young Trees in the South Downs' was painted 'en plein air' in oils on board on a windy day at Egdean near Petworth.
I was on a painting weekend with artist Jenny Tyson who inspired us by looking at Scottish artist Joan Eardly's lively, wild and espressive work.
Joan would often collage bits and pieces into her paintings to add texture as I have done here with some cow parsley seeds. I loved the row of silvery young trees (Poplars I think) which echoed the shapes of the Downs.

I took my sketchbook and watercolours to the Outer Hebrides for a week a few years ago and I couldn't stop painting - what inspirational surroundings and scenery! I do hope to go again one day. In the meantime I have painted a few oils from my watercolour sketches. This painting will be for sale at Petersfield Arts and Crafts Exhibition from 21st to 25th August as part of Hampshire Open Studios. |
For several years I taught some prestigious Botanical Art courses for Orient Expressed Hotels and was lucky enough to teach and stay at The Cipriani Hotel. Between the Botanicals I couldn't resist grabbing a little sketchbook and my watercolour box to catch the views and the ever-changing light especially in the early morning with the fog lifting. |
