I took my sketchbook and watercolours to the Outer Hebrides for a week a few years ago and I couldn't stop painting - what inspirational colours and light..... and those white sand beaches! I really hope to return one day. In the meantime I have painted a few oils from my watercolour sketches. |

Rosa 'Dublin Bay', watercolour, framed, £950.
Rosa 'Dublin Bay' was on show at 'Say it With Flowers' at Oxmarket Contemporary until 6th July 2025. I was saving this one for something special as it is the last botanical painting I have available and I have now moved on (or should I say back) to an experimental phase in my later years. Red roses are notoriously difficult to paint in watercolour (or for that matter, any medium). I wouldn't and probably couldn't paint this now! |
This painting was accepted for the South Downs Open Exhibition at Petersfield Museum & Art Gallery - 22 October 2024 to 1 February 2025
Young Trees in the South Downs, nr Petworth, oil on board, 69 x 54 cm, grey wood frame. £550

'Young Trees in the South Downs' was painted 'en plein air' in oils on board on a windy day at Egdean near Petworth. I was on a painting weekend with artist Jenny Tyson who inspired us by looking at Scottish artist Joan Eardly's lively, wild and espressive work. Joan would often collage bits and pieces into her paintings to add texture as I have done here with some cow parsley seeds. I loved the row of silvery young trees (Poplars I think) which echoed the shapes of the Downs.

This painting was donated to a silent auction at a fundraising event in London on 6 November 2024 for very worthwhile charity:

Isla del Lido from the Cipriani Venice, oil on box canvas, 53.5 x 103.5 cm, in white tray-frame
From a quick, small, direct watercolour in a sketchbook, this was painted in oils on canvas years later in my studio. I was priviledged to tutor some watercolour botanical art courses based at the Cipriani Hotel in Venice and I seized any brief opportunities to paint the inspirational surroundings. The ever-changing light effects were stunning.

Workshops & Courses
I am not taking on any teaching commitments this year as I need to concentrate on my own work before I completely forget how to paint! You may be able to acquire a second-hand copy of one of my books (see Biography page for details).
